OMOLUABI: Self Actualization and Communal Responsibility

Dr. Segun Gbadegesin was the speaker that Tuesday morning. I would never forget this discussion because it was about a very sensitive subject, religion. Dr. Segun Gbadegesin explained religion to us in a way I never been taught. Instead of "preaching" he informed us on religion as a whole and how it changes over time. He talked about before the God we worship there was "Ma'at" who had a very similar list of commands that were very similar to the 10 commandments in the bible. One of my favorite stories was about a young couple: Iwa and Orumila. The husband was a close to perfection as possible and basically he had to be to stay with his wife who was very spoiled. As soon as the husband started to complain the wife ran away. After the husband did many African rituals with the drum and prayer the wife finally came back. In the end Orumila learned not to take anybody for granted. Overall the lecture was very memorable and one of my favorite parts were the talking drum. Where he brought in a live drummer and literally made the drums sound out words. Also I took away a very interesting quote from the material: “Honor may vanish from your house.Cosmetic beauty may fade.Iwa is what endures even into the grave. Take care of your iwa”
